Major Events
The South African apartheid was a national segregation that separated white people and black people. Everyone that lived there was effected by this from the 1940's to 1990's. This unfortunate event was caused by the leading government party during that time called the National party. This party was an all white party and as soon as they gained power over the nation they began to strictly enforce segregation laws and racism towards black people to maintain power and control. They gave them less rights than white people and treated them as if the white people were superior. The major Human rights violations occurred very soon after these events. Black people were made to live in certain places and had no choice. They were also only allowed to own very small portions of land, while white people owned 87% of land but only accounted for 15% of the population. To add to all of this non-white people also had their south african citizenship taken away. Another form of the racial segregation here during the apartheid was the physical separation of black and white people by making places that only white people were able to go.
This sign shows the public discrimination during this time. This sign is telling everyone that the place behind it is a white only area and no black people are allowed to be there.
Nelson Mandela
A lot of the major events in South Africa during the apartheid had to do with Nelson Mandela. He was one of the leading protesters, and had one of the biggest impacts on its eventual abolishment. Nelson Mandela lived in South Africa during the apartheid and even though he was a lawyer he still was subject to the racial discrimination and segregation. He originally started to protest against the apartheid in peaceful ways like rallies and protests. As Mandela began to protest more and more he began to realize that his protests weren't accomplishing anything and that he needed to change his tactics. He decided that they should plant a bomb in a government building to try to get more attention and show that the resistance was serious. Although the bomb was always intended to not hurt anybody Nelson Mandela was still found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Although Nelson Mandela was no longer able to fight the injustice in prison, his followers continued his dreams and by the time he was released from prison in 1990 the apartheid was over.
